In the spring Tony and CICS were approached by Holy Trinity Senior School with a request to be responsible for a faith/retreat day for about 180 year seven (1st year) students during the final week of the summer term. This was a first for Tony and CICS but it was felt to be too good an opportunity to miss The event was held at The King's Centre, King Cross Lane. Mark Whitcombe, a volunteer on the day gives us his impression of the event.
It seems only right to begin this report by acknowledging the amount of effort put in by Tony and CICS to make Lifelight possible. The planning and the work involved is a testament to hard work and answered prayer.
So what was Lifelight all about? In 1 John we are told quite clearly that God is the light in a world of darkness -a world where it is a temptation to follow the popular view. The students were encouraged to put this to one side and think for themselves in a day of fun and happy worship.
The programme
In three large groups, sub-divided into teams named after nations in Euro 2008 all the students took part in three activities.- Team building
- Crafts
- The Labyrinth
Team building, held inside because of the drizzly weather, was a time of activity and physical games.
In the craft sessions children painted little candle holders and made their own stained glass windows out of paper of various different colours. The aim - to think about light, God's creation and Jesus as THE light.
Set out in the main hall, the Labyrinth was designed to help students to make their own choices as they visited the different activities. Team discussions followed each activity and on a personal level some of these were very encouraging.
In a world of darkness and corruption it is refreshing to have an event where children are able to explore life on a more personal level rather than continuing to follow 'the crowd'. Let us pray seeds have been planted and praise God for the work he is doing through CICS!
