A letter from our Lead Schools Worker Neil Harris:
The temperatures have begun to cool, the early mornings and evenings are becoming darker and all these are inevitable signs that a new Autumn season is fast approaching. So too, CICS is beginning a new season as our lead worker Neil is moving on after four years serving the schools of Calderdale. Having moved to the region to Pastor a church in Keighley in 2015, alongside his CICS role, Neil has now accepted the call to Pastor a church in Stockton On Tees and will also be employed to deliver a mentoring project for young adults. Neil has felt privileged to work in our area and has loved the diversity of the role, the amazing young people he has worked with and the helpful staff who have opened doors for CICS to come in and serve. Neil is confident that as he was passed a baton when Tony, previous lead worker, moved on, he now passes that baton onto Chris, Sarah and Nancy and the trustees to continue this incredible work into the 2020s. -- I am sure you join the trustees, Sarah, Chris and Nancy in thanking Neil for his work with CICS since 2015. As life in schools change we are taking time to consider and pray about our next step so that we continue to best meet the requests and invitations that schools make to CICS. In November we are holding a Supporters Evening and we would love to invite you to that... Christians in Calderdale Schools would like to invite you and a guest to a Supporters Evening.
Tuesday 12th November 2019, 5pm - 7pm, Cafe 8:16, Dean Clough, Halifax The evening includes a jacket potato buffet and an opportunity to hear more about the exciting work of CICS in schools across Calderdale. The evening is aimed at supporters, church leaders, volunteers, those who pray for CICS and those interested in reaching young people and staff in schools across our Borough. CICS Annual General Meeting will also form a short part of the evening. RSVP: office@cicscalderdale.org.uk PDF Download As the school year comes to an end our team reflects on the last few weeks... Neil writes: The team have had a fruitful term with input in both Primary and High Schools. In Primary Schools, both staff and volunteers have been actively involved in the It’s Your Move program, as a now well established part of Year 6 Transition in many Calderdale schools. Great comments from staff and parents were received on the newly revised books and how attractive they were. One school receptionist even asked for one for her daughter who goes to a school out of the area. Neil and Sarah had an invite to take part in the RE week at Parkinson Lane School. We delivered a workshop on the work of the Church in local community. The students particularly enjoyed acting out the Parable of the Good Samaritan. In High Schools, the staff team have supported Religious Studies in Ryburn School. In preparation for GCSE revision, we did some workshops to help students understand some more difficult topics. In Year 8 classes we worked on the subject of “What does being a Christian mean to us and how do we apply our faith to everyday life annd with nine Year 7 classes looking at the Church and local mission. We are able to explore different organisations like Street Angels, The Gathering Place and Bus Oasis as local expressions of this. When the team lead lessons we always allow time for questions at the end and this term had insightful ones including “What is God like?” And “How does God speak to you?” Let’s thank God for this year and pray next year will be even greater for us.
